Reflection time

Hey Blog. So this time I am going to be going back and reflecting upon the magazine issue that I have completed.

Throughout the process and journey of creating the magazine I often had struggles, along with highs and lows. When I first began this process doing a travel magazine wasn't what I had planned. Originally, I was planning on making a teenager targeted magazine about real life in high school, as shown through a high schoolers POV. However, I scrapped this idea as I felt like I had a lack of things to write about that were genuinely interesting. I moved on and decided upon a travel magazine, as I had traveled to many places both in this country, and around the world. I had kept records of restaurants, and took lots of photos of multiple places. I wanted to have my target audience be younger, backpackers but struggled to find an accurate tittle to convey that theme. I was between a number of ones before I chose 'Vagabond' as that word means someone who travels from place to place without a home. To be completely honest, my biggest issue with this project was just procrastination. I procrastinated the most on actually starting the magazine and "putting pen to paper". Once I was finally able to get over this, great things truly did begin to happen. When I began to create my cover, I created it using one of the canva presets available. They had a lot of great options and I was stuck between a few. Once I decided upon one, I was constantly changing and moving things around on the cover. Sometimes, canva would undo the things I did, which made it particularly annoying. But in the end, it all worked itself out. I always knew the image I wanted to use for my cover image, as when I took the image I was truly cultivated by the beauty and I wanted readers to get that same feeling. When it came to my table of contents, this is where I feel like my work is the best. I came up with the idea to call it "road map" to stick to the travel theme. Although I did not write articles for all the things on the table of contents, I still was able to come up with clever titles, a brief description, and a picture. Titles such as "Miami Spice" and "Rocky Mountain High" were all over the page, in a neat order that was easy to follow. When I started the two page spread, my biggest issue was layout. Since you cannot put things on canva side by side, it made things particularly difficult. However, I was eventually able to find one that made it easy for the reader to follow. The BIGGEST ISSUE I had the entire project was with the two page spread. Everytime I finished it, I would go to download it. After that, I found canva would change the size of text and move things around which was super annoying. As a result, I had to shrink, move, and delete things all over the two page spread. When I started the project, I knew I wanted to write more than just one article, and that is just what I did. This article was about New York, as during the whole process of the project I was lucky enough to take a trip there. This allowed for a researched trip. Overall, I'm really happy with the way my magazine turned out.

Script- Hi everyone, my name is Jack. For my foundation portfolio, I chose to do a magazine opposed to a film opening for numerous reasons. The first being that it would be easier for me to on my own, and not have to rely on anyone. Also, the lessons of magazines captivated me more than the ones on film opening. My final magazine product is called Vagabond, which means someone who travels from place to place without a home. As you can figure, I went with the genre travel, as I have been fortunate enough to see many places in this world and I wanted to share my experiences. I took inspiration from numerous travel magazines, such as National Geographic Traveler, Travel+Leisure, and wanderlust. I took most inspiration from Travel and Leisure, as it incorporated both destinations and food in it's articles. I challenged typical conventions in the area of travel magazines by having my target audience being geared towards younger people, ages 24-35 who do not have as much money, as a travel magazine for younger people is quite uncommon. Most travel magazines are geared towards people of a more matured age, with lots of money. In the beginning, I struggled throughout the whole magazine when it came to finding layouts that flowed perfectly, and choosing things that worked. However, over time I found out what worked and what didn't. For my magazine cover, I went along with the typical conventions of a travel magazine with the cover image being simple but striking. I also tried to limit the editing of the cover image, so it felt more natural and real. However, one of the conventions that I challenged was with the cover lines. I tried to limit it, as I did not want to distract from the true beauty of the cover image. I also limited the number of cover lines as I didn't want my magazine becoming cluttered, and take away from the things in the image I was trying to point out. In order for my magazine to be unison, I used elements of red, white, and black throughout. This can be seen on all pages. On the table of contents, I decided to label it "road map" to tie in with the overall travel theme. Sticking to typical conventions seen throughout numerous other travel magazines, I decided to include one picture for each article on the table of contents, a clever title, and brief description as readers could easily navigate to whatever article they found to be most interesting. As I stated before, I tried to edit the photos as little as possible. When choosing the places, I tried to pick places that weren't super expensive to see, and places that younger people would typically travel to, as my target audience was young people ages 24-35.  Through the entire project, I knew exactly what I wanted to do for my two-page spread. I knew I wanted to do it about Maui. I challenged the conventions and norms by including both food and activities, something not typically done in this field of genre. I also went against the norms by trying to address the readers as directly as possible, because I wanted to give off a personal and direct vibe. I chose multiple images for the story, and tried to create a nice flow. This was particularly difficult as canva could not allow the pages to be side by side. When working on my magazine, I tried to integrate multiple technologies. For pictures, I either used my iPhone X or my families professional cannon camera. While I tried to edit the photos as little as possible, when I did edit them I used VSCO which I absolutely loved as the customization was limitless and they had many good presets. For a free photo editing app, I was truly surprised with the results, Other than that, the internet was the only other technology I integrated, as it was used for research purposes. I chose to do an additional article because I wanted to go the extra mile. What I did to further reach my target audience was write about things you could do at any hour of the night, as younger people tend to go out later. I also incorporated both activities and food. Overall, the New York article was very similar to the Maui one, with the only difference obviously being the location. Hey blog, so for this time around I'm going to officially finish my two page spread. I've been kinda jumping around back and forth between my New York article and Maui article, but I'm not gonna move on until I complete this article. It's already like 75% done, I Just need like one more paragraph. So in case you have forgotten, I wrote the first page about activities and the second pages all about food and places to eat. For the second page, I chose a variety of restaurants so it is not limited to just a particular type of restaurant, and the "reader" can choose whichever restaurant they might be in the mood for. I'll update this blog once I have finished.

Hellllllo blog! It is official, I completed my two page spread! Wow, just wow, it turned out beautifully. The second page I wrote about three different restaurants: A breakfast place, traditional Hawaiian seafood place, and Italian restaurant. However, I noticed that canvas shifted everything upwards, so I'll try and fix that because it annoys me with those giant white spaces. Hello blog. Not a ton has happened since my last blog, just a little bit of work and touch ups, and some more research. I've been primarily focusing on my New York City article and research surrounding that. I've already chosen my pictures (I'll include again). Even though I recently took a trip to New York where I did lots of things with my sister, both day and night, I still want to research the places so I can include a variety of thorough options for my "readers". For example, I went to Juniors, a famous breakfast place but only ordered a small stack of strawberry pancakes. So I want to research other items on the menu so I can include multiple options. As for the rest of the article, I want to include one restaurant, one activity, and one thing to see. So that's it for this blog, see you next time! -Jack

New York, for the last time (I swear)

Hey blog. So it's spring break and I know I said in previous blogs that I said even though I was ahead I wasn't going to slow down, but I lied. Things have slowed down a tad more than I had hoped. It's just I lost a tad of motivation to do my final article on New York. I've been working on this one for a good minute now but we're gonna finish it this time. Like I said in previous posts, I'm including one restaurant, one activity, and one thing to see. Also, like in the last blog, I'll put the finished thing in the bottom.

So little problem with attaching my article, since I can't get it to download. But no need to worry, I finished the article. I wrote about times square and multiple other things. I wrote mostly about restaurants as I've been to many great places in New York, it's easy, and a lot of them are open all day and night. So, that means we're wrapping up on the magazine. touch ups

Hello blog. So I've been working on numerous things recently. Before I finish my two page spread, I wanted to go back to and brush up some things. This includes making things that are on two separate pages symmetrical. This is particularly hard because you can't drag things over. Besides that, I've also gone through making sure things are grammatically correct and make sense. I've caught quite a few stupid mistakes that make literally zero sense. I also had some friends go through it to catch any of the mistakes that I couldn't. Doing the peer reviews in class, have been extremely helpful to me and some of the things pointed out were things that I had not noticed, so I decided to try it with my family. Initially, they liked the cover but my title was worded weird. I tried to fix this but it surprisingly difficult to do so. Overall, that is really the only major thing they pointed out to me and said that it looked like it was coming along very nicely. That is it for this blog, see you next time! -Jack
